Description:

What is the “Godmonster of Indian Flats”?  It is a truly unique 1973 movie written and directed by Frederic Hobbs, filmed on the Comstock, including an iconic scene with a mutant sheep at St. Mary’s Art Center!  The film stars Christopher Brooks, E. Kerrigan Prescott, Karen Ingenthron, and Stuart Lancaster.  The film is available to view or purchase online and there are great write ups about it available on various websites.

What is “Exquisite Corpse”?  This is a fun, freeing, and collaborative art technique that includes two (or more) artists working separately to create one work of art.  Neither artist will know what the other has created until the exhibition is hung, much like the Godmonster in the film.

This process creates some of the most unique, quirky, sometimes fascinatingly complimentary, works of art.  It is the perfect technique to properly celebrate the Godmonster of Indian Flats movie and its 50th anniversary!

The paired artists will be given a 16”x20” gallery wrapped canvas that is divided in half with one half covered.  The first artist will create a piece of art “the head” (no background) that begins at the dividing line and utilizes the uncovered space.  Once it is complete, the artist covers their work with paper and tape (provided) and returns the work to the art center.  The second artist will begin their work on the “toes”, the other blank half of the canvas, using the lines of the first artist to “connect” their work.

Each participating artist will create one “head” and one “toe” piece.  The combination of artists for each piece will be different.

Who Is Eligible to Apply:

  • All area artists, photographers, makers, or other creatives

  • All ages 14 years and older

  • Preference may be given to Comstock residents in honor of the movie locations

The Rules:

  • The artists may NOT collaborate or discuss their concepts with each other, that defeats the purpose and fun of the technique!

  • Artist #2 – NO PEEKING!  Do NOT remove the paper covering the Artist #1’s work.

  • Artists are requested but not required to create work that connects to the movie in some way (literal, non-literal, conceptual, or other means)/

  • All mediums are welcome.

  • Artists must use the provided canvases.

  • Artists must pick up and drop off the canvas to St. Mary’s Art Center unless otherwise coordinated in advance with the Executive Director.

  • Deadlines are firm – if you cannot commit to and meet them, please do not apply.  Missing the deadlines creates a cascading effect and will impact the other artist and the art center.  This is a true team project.

  • No backgrounds, unless extremely limited and do NOT touch the dividing the line of the artwork.

  • Three dimensional objects may be added to the work, but must not be heavy, sharp, nor extend more than 5” from the edges or planes of the canvas.

  • This is a family-friendly exhibition – please respect and keep this in mind.

  • All canvases must have proper D-ring and wire hanging hardware attached (provided).

  • Artists agree to allow St. Mary’s Art Center to use, copy, and share the artwork for marketing, promotions, social media, communications, grant reporting, archiving.

  • The artists retain copyright of their portion of the work.

  • Artists will not receive compensation for the work unless the piece is sold.  St. Mary’s Art Center will retain 34% of the proceeds and the artists will each receive 33%.

  • Unsold work will be returned to the artist who created the “head”.

  • Artwork not picked up within 15 days of the close of the exhibition will be considered a donation to St. Mary’s Art Center for raffle, silent auction, or other sale or use.

What is Provided by St. Mary’s Art Center to the Artists:

  • 16”x20” gallery wrapped canvas with D-ring and wire hanging hardware.

  • Paper and tape (Artist #1 will use the piece covering Artist #2 space to cover their work)

What is Provided by the Artists:

  • Completed artwork that follows the rules of the project, and by the required deadlines

  • All materials necessary to create the work, excluding the canvas and hanging hardware provided by SMAC

The Exhibition:

Work meeting the rules of the project will be exhibited in our first-floor galleries throughout the duration of the exhibition.  St. Mary's Art Center reserves the exclusive right to include or exclude submitted work in the exhibition.  Sold and unsold works will be collected at the close of the show, coordinated with the Executive Director.

Godmonster of Indian Flats Anniversary Celebration and Artist Reception:

St. Mary’s Art Center will host a free art reception on Saturday, October 14, 2023.  This event will include refreshments, silent auction, and other celebrations.  The film will be ticketed and shown at scheduled times throughout the weekend.

Artists are not required to attend the reception, though always highly encouraged.  This will be a particularly fun and multi-dimensional reception and event!  Come celebrate and enjoy the event!

Pick Up & Drop Off:

Artists must coordinate a time and date in advance for pick up and drop off of the canvases.  Our calendar is complex and includes artist retreats, private rentals, and other factors that may limit days and availability.
