"Orphic Excavations"
"Orphic Excavations," an exhibition by Anthony Alston at St. Mary's Art Center (SMACenter), is the product of a two-month long Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) artist residency.
A reception for the artist will take place Saturday, May 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. SMACenter located at 55 North R St., Virginia City, NV. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited. The Center is open daily from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
During his residency at SMACenter, Mr. Alston has focused on unearthing veins in the epic tales surrounding Virginia City and the foundation of the St. Mary's Art Center. By investigating, and subsequently diffusing and filtering, historical facts and legends in conjunction with using the structure of the historic building, Mr. Alston has created an engaging site-specific installation.
SMACenter Executive Director Linda Nazemian comments,"This
exhibit is a defining one for the SMACenter, which in the past has focused
on more traditional exhibitions. We are excited to open our exhibit space
to a full range of artists and mediums that will engage the broad range
of audiences that visit the center. Through our partnership with CCAI
we hope to continue to bring emerging artists to work and exhibit at
the center."
As part of CCAI's Artists in Education program, Mr. Alston is also in residence
at Carson High School, guiding students in a collaborative project that
will be on display later this spring on the school campus.
Born in Minnesota, Mr. Alston grew up and resides in Reno, Nevada. He received his Bachelor Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2007. He works in a variety of media work, including video, photography, sound, performance, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited in Reno and Las Vegas; Chico, California; and Manchester, England.
Orphic Excavations will be on view through June 29.
